Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Why did the client contact us?

A 27-year-old male presented after being diagnosed with diarrhoea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D). He had a history of mental health issues, poor sleep, and high stress, which had begun affecting his ability to work requiring time off.

His symptoms included urgent bowel motions up to seven times per day, nausea, significant bloating, and excessive flatulence. Symptoms fluctuated considerably, with symptom-free days followed by periods of severe gastrointestinal discomfort.

What we found

A comprehensive assessment identified that his symptoms were multifactorial. Stress and mood were identified to be major contributors via the gut–brain axis, alongside several dietary triggers.

Our treatment plan

Over five appointments across six months, we developed an individualised nutrition plan focusing on identifying dietary triggers, improving gut health, and introducing evidence-based supplements where appropriate. Education around the gut–brain axis helped the client understand the connection between stress, sleep, and digestive symptoms while building practical, long-term management strategies.

Results

After six months, the client experienced a 50% improvement in IBS symptoms. Episodes of bowel urgency reduced from every few days to approximately once a fortnight, while bloating and excessive flatulence resolved completely in his words. He also reported improved energy levels, greater confidence in managing his symptoms, and a better quality of life.
