Body Composition Analysis Scan

Better Understand Your Body Composition with a Medical-Grade DEXA Scan

At WLC Medical, we provide medical-grade Body Composition Analysis (DEXA) scans in Belmont, Perth, helping you better understand your body composition and establish an accurate baseline to support your health, fitness and wellbeing.

Our state-of-the-art DEXA scanner is one of only a small number of this model available in Western Australia, providing highly accurate measurements using very low-dose X-ray technology.

Whether you’re managing your weight, monitoring changes during GLP-1 treatment, improving sporting performance or simply wanting a better understanding of your health, a DEXA Body Composition Analysis provides detailed insights that go far beyond the number on the scales.

Every scan is performed by one of our trained Physiotherapists or Accredited Practising Dietitians, who take the time to ensure you feel at ease throughout your appointment and understand the purpose of your assessment.

Unlike many imaging providers, your appointment isn’t rushed. We take the time to explain the scan, answer your questions and ensure you understand what your results mean. Our trained Physiotherapists and Accredited Practising Dietitians are experienced in performing DEXA scans and explaining your results in a clear, easy-to-understand way, so you leave your appointment feeling informed and confident about your next steps.

No GP referral is required, although we also welcome referrals from your GP or specialist.

Why Have a Body Composition Analysis Scan?

Weight and Body Mass Index (BMI) can be useful initial screening tools, but they don’t provide a complete picture of your health.

BMI estimates whether your weight falls within a healthy range based on your height and weight. However, it doesn’t distinguish between muscle, body fat and bone, or show where body fat is stored. This means two people with the same BMI may have very different body compositions and health risks.

A Body Composition Analysis (DEXA) scan provides a much more detailed understanding of your body composition by accurately measuring lean muscle mass, body fat, visceral fat, fat distribution and bone mineral content.

This information can help you better understand your current health, establish an accurate baseline, monitor changes over time and make more informed decisions about your nutrition, exercise and overall wellbeing.

Your scan may help to:

  • Measure lean muscle mass
  • Assess body fat percentage
  • Measure visceral fat
  • Assess fat distribution throughout the body
  • Measure bone mineral content
  • Establish an accurate baseline for future comparison
  • Monitor changes during weight management, exercise or rehabilitation programs
  • Support informed health and lifestyle decisions

Who May Benefit from a Body Composition Analysis Scan?

A Body Composition Analysis scan may be suitable for:

  • Individuals beginning a weight management program
  • People wanting a more accurate understanding of their health than weight alone can provide
  • Recreational and competitive athletes
  • People monitoring changes in muscle mass or body fat
  • Individuals recovering from injury, illness or surgery
  • Individuals who have experienced significant weight loss, including those using GLP-1 medications
  • Individuals wanting to maintain muscle mass and support healthy ageing

If you’re unsure whether a Body Composition Analysis scan is appropriate for you, our team is happy to help.

What Happens During Your Appointment?

A Body Composition Analysis scan is quick, comfortable and non-invasive.

During your appointment, one of our trained Physiotherapists or Accredited Practising Dietitians will explain the procedure before carrying out your scan.

We recommend wearing comfortable clothing without metal zips, buttons or underwire where possible. You may be asked to remove items such as belts, jewellery, watches or keys before the scan. If required, a towel can be provided for your comfort during the assessment.

During your appointment you will:

  • Meet with one of our trained clinicians
  • Have the opportunity to ask any questions before your scan
  • Lie comfortably on the DEXA scanner while images are captured
  • Remain still for a few minutes while the scan is completed

The scan itself only takes a short time, allowing more time during your appointment to explain the process, answer your questions and ensure you understand your results.

The scan uses extremely low-dose X-rays and does not involve injections or enclosed spaces.

Understanding Your Results

You’ll receive a comprehensive clinical report, comparable to those provided by established medical imaging services for Bone Density and Body Composition assessments, within 7 business days.

Your report includes:

  • Lean muscle mass
  • Total body fat percentage
  • Visceral fat assessment
  • Regional fat and lean tissue distribution
  • Bone mineral content
  • A clinical summary to assist you and your healthcare provider in understanding your results

If your scan was requested by your GP or specialist, we recommend booking a follow-up appointment with them to discuss your results and any ongoing management.

If you have booked your scan without a referral, we’re equally committed to supporting your ongoing care. With your permission, we can send your comprehensive report directly to your GP so they have the information needed to continue your care, discuss your results and determine whether any further assessment or treatment is appropriate.
