DEXA Sport Package

Better Understand Your Total Body Composition and Metabolism.

At WLC Medical, our DEXA Sport Package combines a medical-grade Total Body Composition DEXA scan with ECAL metabolism testing, providing detailed insights into your body composition and how your body uses energy at rest.

This advanced assessment goes beyond weight alone, helping you establish an accurate baseline, monitor changes over time and better understand factors that may influence your health, nutrition, fitness and performance goals.

The DEXA Sport Package is performed exclusively by our Accredited Practising Dietitians, who are trained in both Total Body Composition DEXA scanning and ECAL metabolism testing. They take the time to explain each assessment, answer your questions and help you understand your results.

No GP referral is required for your DEXA Body Composition Analysis Scan, although we do welcome referrals from your GP or specialist.

Who May Benefit?

The DEXA Sport Package isn’t just for athletes. This assessment may be suitable for:

  • Recreational athletes and fitness enthusiasts
  • Individuals managing their weight, including those struggling with weight despite lifestyle efforts
  • People using GLP-1 medications, following significant weight loss, transitioning to weight maintenance or undergoing bariatric surgery
  • Masters athletes and individuals focused on maintaining muscle mass and supporting healthy ageing
  • Individuals returning to training following injury or periods of reduced activity
  • Postpartum or post-breastfeeding women wanting to better understand changes in their body composition
  • People with metabolic conditions, including PCOS, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome or insulin resistance

If you’re unsure whether this assessment is appropriate for you, our team is happy to help.

What Does It Assess?

Weight and Body Mass Index (BMI) can be useful initial screening tools, but they don’t provide a complete picture of your health or how your body uses energy.

By combining a Total Body Composition DEXA scan with ECAL metabolism testing, the DEXA Sport Package provides a more detailed understanding of your body composition and metabolism.

Total Body Composition DEXA Scan

Your DEXA scan provides a detailed assessment of:

  • Lean muscle mass
  • Fat mass
  • Bone mineral content
  • Visceral fat
  • Subcutaneous fat distribution

ECAL Metabolism Test

Your metabolism assessment provides:

  • An accurate measurement of resting metabolic rate (RMR)
  • Insight into your body’s preferred fuel source at rest (carbohydrate versus fat utilisation)

Preparing for Your DEXA Sport Package

Preparation instructions for both your DEXA scan and ECAL metabolism test will be provided at the time of booking to help you prepare for your assessment and ensure accurate results.

We recommend wearing comfortable clothing without metal zips, buttons, underwire, or hi-vis clothing with reflective tape where possible. You may be asked to remove items such as belts, jewellery, watches or keys before your DEXA scan. If required, a towel can be provided for your comfort.

Your assessment is non-invasive and completed during a single appointment. One of our Accredited Practising Dietitians will explain each assessment before carrying out your Total Body Composition DEXA scan and ECAL metabolism test.

Understanding Your Results

Your ECAL metabolism results are available on the day of your assessment and will be briefly discussed with you during your appointment. You’ll also leave with a copy of your ECAL results.

Your dietitian will also briefly discuss your Body Composition DEXA scan results with you on the day, helping you understand the key findings from your assessment.

Following your DEXA scan, your images are carefully reviewed, and you’ll receive a comprehensive clinical report, comparable to those provided by established medical imaging services for bone density and body composition assessments, within 7 business days.

With your permission, we’re also happy to send your comprehensive DEXA report directly to your GP to support continuity of care.

Dietetic Advice and Your DEXA Sport Package

If you choose our DEXA Sport Package (Body Composition DEXA Scan and ECAL Metabolism Testing), the consultation with your dietitian on the day is limited to briefly discussing your initial DEXA results and ECAL metabolism results.

Due to the volume and detail of information collected, this appointment does not include comprehensive dietetic advice.

If you are a new patient seeking detailed dietary advice (e.g. weight management or nutrition planning), we recommend booking an initial 60-minute consultation with a dietitian. This appointment can be scheduled either before your DEXA Sport Package or at a later time that suits you and will help optimise your results and ongoing care.

Ready to Book Your DEXA Sport Package?

Whether you’re looking to optimise your performance, better understand your metabolism, monitor changes during weight management or establish an accurate baseline for your health, our Accredited Practising Dietitians are here to help.
