Metabolism Testing

Stop guessing how your metabolism works

At WLC Medical, our Accredited Practising Dietitians offer advanced, non-invasive metabolism testing in Belmont, Perth, using ECAL Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) technology.

This simple assessment provides valuable information about how your body uses energy at rest, helping your dietitian develop more personalised nutrition and lifestyle recommendations based on objective data rather than estimates.

Metabolism testing is offered as part of your dietitian appointment. However, the test is optional, and you can choose not to proceed if you have any health limitations or concerns. If you have any questions about whether metabolism testing is suitable for you, please speak with our administration team before your appointment.

Why Test Your Metabolism?

Metabolic health plays an important role in how your body regulates weight, energy, blood sugar, and fat storage.

Metabolism testing may be beneficial for people wanting a better understanding of how their body uses energy, including those experiencing:

  • Difficulty losing or maintaining weight
  • Low energy or fatigue
  • Insulin resistance, PCOS, or fatty liver disease
  • Feeling that your body isn’t responding despite healthy eating and regular exercise
  • Wanting more personalised nutrition advice
  • Establishing a baseline before starting a health, fitness, or weight management program

Whether your goal is improving your overall health, supporting healthy ageing, enhancing sports performance, or gaining a clearer understanding of your metabolism, metabolism testing can provide valuable insight to help guide more personalised nutrition and lifestyle recommendations.

What Does the Test Measure?

The assessment takes approximately 5 minutes and simply involves sitting comfortably while breathing normally through a mouthpiece.

It provides information about:

  • Your Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR)
  • How efficiently your body burns fat and carbohydrates
  • Your overall metabolic efficiency

Results are available immediately and are interpreted by your dietitian alongside your medical history, blood test results, current eating habits, lifestyle, symptoms, and health goals during your appointment.

How Your Results Are Used

Rather than relying on estimates or generic formulas, metabolism testing provides objective information that helps your dietitian:

  • Tailor your energy and nutrition requirements more accurately
  • Identify signs of metabolic adaptation or metabolic stress
  • Reduce unnecessary trial-and-error approaches
  • Align nutrition and lifestyle recommendations with how your body is functioning at the time of testing

The goal isn’t to label your metabolism as “good” or “bad”, but to use reliable clinical information to guide smarter, more personalised care.

Body Composition & Metabolic Assessment (DEXA Sport Package)

If you have booked our Body Composition & Metabolic Assessment (DEXA Sports Package), your appointment includes a Total Body Composition DEXA scan and ECAL Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) testing.

During your appointment, your dietitian will explain the results of your DEXA scan and metabolism assessment, answer any questions you may have, and discuss what the findings mean for your health and future goals.

Due to the amount of information collected, this appointment is focused on interpreting your DEXA scan and ECAL results and does not include a comprehensive dietetic consultation or personalised nutrition plan.

A detailed Body Composition Analysis report will be emailed to you within 7 business days.

If you are a new patient seeking detailed dietary advice, such as weight management, sports nutrition, or medical nutrition therapy, we recommend booking a 60-minute initial consultation with one of our dietitians. This appointment can be scheduled either before or after your Body Composition & Metabolic Assessment to help optimise your results and support your ongoing care.
